Picture this: a manual Suzuki Jimny GL 5-door in South Africa that’s had a proper Garrett turbo conversion — the little boxy legend that went from “cute and capable” to “mild-to-wild mountain goat with attitude.”Stock, the 1.5-litre K15B in the GL 5-door (the more practical five-door version with the extra doors and space) makes a humble 75 kW and 130 Nm through its five-speed manual and proper AllGrip 4×4 with low range. It’s already a proper off-roader — ladder frame, solid axles, 210 mm ground clearance, and the ability to go places bigger bakkies fear. But on SA highways, steep mountain passes, or when you’re loaded with camping gear, rooftop tent, and the dog, it can feel a bit breathless.Enter the popular South African Garrett GT17 turbo conversion (the kind SG Performance in Joburg and others have been fitting to hundreds of Jimnys). It’s a bolt-on setup that keeps the standard engine internals and fuel system, adds a small efficient Garrett GT17 turbo, a large intercooler, a free-flowing 63 mm stainless exhaust, proper oil lines, heat shielding, a turbo blanket, and smart Unichip (or similar) mapping. Result? Roughly 130 kW and a meaty 250 Nm at a gentle 0.3–0.35 bar of boost
